About the Teso University Project

TESO UNIVERSITY
A NEW MODEL FOR EDUCATION IN AFRICA

Vision: To be a leading educational institution, inspired by love for God, distinct for innovation, creativity, and community transformation.

Mission: Our aim is to nurture and graduate skilled, innovative job creators with cutting-edge knowledge, personal integrity, and leadership abilities, to serve and transform communities in Uganda, Africa, and the global community.

THE CHALLENGE:

Uganda currently is the world's youngest country, with almost 80% of its population under the age of 30. Youth literacy rates are strong (90%), but tertiary enrollment is stalled at 3%.

Many agree that higher education in Africa has failed to respond to the problems afflicting the people of the continent. Medical schools are graduating hundreds of nurses and doctors every year, but health indicators have remained remarkably and devastatingly low. People, especially children under five, continue to die of malaria and other preventable diseases in unacceptable numbers.

Although African universities have granted many PhD's in agriculture, agriculture has remained substantially subsistent, and fails to contribute to better nutrition or household incomes. Leadership and infrastructure in Africa remains a major challenge, impeding instead of accelerating development.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Teso University physical plant is being currently being designed and built in partnership with U. Mass/Amherst (see site development summary, below).

Teso University will matriculate its first students in 2013, in two departments:

  • Sustainable Rural Technologies- Training future agribusiness entrepreneurs in a comprehensive integrated curriculum of agricultural science, applied engineering and business planning.
  • Education- Training future teachers in a student-centered, problem-based, responsive approach to the standard O and A level curricula.

Both departments will graduate both two-year diploma holders and four-year degree holders.

Our intention is to create an atmosphere based in genuine African experience, infused with Christian devotion and freedom, where future entrepreneurs and leaders can develop the practical knowledge, direct experience, and personal character to thrive.
